Lyrics: The Great Chicago Fire

Mrs. O'Leary - I have a theory: Why did your cow burn Chicago that night?
Were you there in the barn? In someone else's arms?
Was someone else holding you tight?

Mrs. O'Leary - I'm growing weary of the excuses I hear from you.
Now I'm not naming names, but my heart's up in flames,
all because of you know who!

You said that you weren't home then. I know that you're a liar.
And now my heart's in blazes,
Like the Great Chicago Fire

Mrs. O'Leary - Answer my query.
What were you doing that night anyhow?
Chicago burned right down, while you were fooling 'round.
And you blamed it all on your cow.

Just like Chicago's burning, my flames are growing higher.
And now my heart's in blazes
Like the Great Chicago Fire

You said that you weren't home then. Liar, liar, you conspire!
To burn my heart to cinders
Like the Great Chicago Fire

Mrs. O'Leary - My eyes are bleary from all the tears I cried for you.
My fingers have been burned. My lesson has been learned.
I'll only trust someone who's true.
I'll only trust someone who's true.
Someone much better than you.

It's the Great Chicago Fire

About The Song

This is the song that got recorded first for the album, and has the most musicians on it. Craig and Brad from The Taters provide the vocals, with Craig on the lead. They've got really smooth harmonies, in my opinion. Charles "King" Arthur played the 12 string and regular 6 string guitar. I wish I could have had him for more songs, but he's a busy man. I played the guitar going up the scale during the chorus, so don't blame him for that one.

Kevin Pryor played drums and did his best to follow my instructions to make the ending sound like the drums on "She Said She Said" by the Beatles. Lots of snare fills. I wanted more. And more cowbell...

Background: My CD player got stolen out of my car on the night before I had a 4 hour road trip to North Carolina, so I was without tunes. So I started singing to myself. The lines "Mrs. O'Leary, I have a theory" popped out, and for the rest of the trip I created the song outloud. By the time I had gotten home, the whole song had been created.
